The BAFTAs go carbon neutral with Green Gift Cards for 2020

5 Feb 2020 • 4 minute read

Organisers of the Bafta Awards this year announced that this year’s ceremony would be “carbon neutral”. As is the same with many industries, awards shows which are renowned for flying in guests from afar and gifting lavish goody bags are coming under close scrutiny over their environmental footprint.

bafta.jpgThis season, the Bafta’s made a number of changes to their approach in an attempt to become more sustainable with organisers claiming the entire event will be “carbon neutral”.

Dame Pippa Harris, Bafta chair, told the media: “Like everyone, we are increasingly concerned about the impact of climate change and it just feels like we can no longer do nothing, that is just not acceptable.”

One initiative this year signals the end of the traditional goody bag, which often contains a number of expensive gifts such as beauty products and bottles of champagne given out to congratulate nominees and citation readers instead opting to give them an exclusive Nominee Gifting Wallet instead.

Designed by GROUNDTRUTH, this bespoke travel wallet is made  of  100% recycled plastic and is filled with a wonderful collection of gift cards for lavish services and experiences, courtesy  of BAFTA’s Official Film Awards Partners.

The cards inside the GROUNDTURTH wallet are produced by Green Gift Cards from Livewire and are Certified Plastic Free, are fully recyclable and compostable and on average 97% less carbon is
produced to make these paperboard cards than standard plastic cards.

As with all the cards produced by Green Gift cards, they were produced on Iggesund’s Invercote paperboard made at Iggesund’s mill in Sweden which is powered by bio energy, they were printed buy our partners at Thames Technology and the finished BAFTA cards feature a cellulose laminate from Celanese that gives a luxurious glossy finish to the cards.

To top off the experience for the recipients, the Nominee Gifting Wallet is also delivered in a bag made  from cassava root, which is fully biodegradable. This considered approach to the materials used in producing the Nominees Gifting Wallet reflects BAFTA’s global commitment to bringing the film, games and television industries together to tackle the industry’s environmental impact and to encourage screen audiences to act for a sustainable future.

Introducing our range of plastic-free cards

Since 2006 we have been innovating and disrupting in the card market to develop what is a leading range of environmentally-friendly card solutions. So what sets us apart?

Well that’s the thing, there’s a number of reasons why Green Gift Cards are renowned in the world of card production. It is the material we use for our cards and the certification that the cards come with. It is also the compelling environmental story (we urge you to watch the video) that is behind all of our cards and the fact that, once finished with, our cards are compostable and can be recycled in normal household waste streams. Oh and we’ll say it again – being environmentally-friendly doesn’t mean they are more expensive. In fact they offer great value compared to plastic cards.
